Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Something is wrong with Hollywood. They’ve forgotten how to make engaging, enjoyable films.

Furiosa

Despite its great special effects, I found Furiosa sadly boring from beginning to end. A prequel to the sensationally admired Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), it functions as a retread.

Though Anya Taylor-Joy plays Furiosa, she doesn’t appear in the first hour of the film. You see her as a kidnapped child played by Alyla Browne. Taken from her home in Green Place of Many Mothers by a biker gang led by Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), her loving mother is killed trying to save her.

As Furiosa matures, the film becomes little more than a constant battle sweeping through a country referred to as the Wasteland. Two tyrants, Dementus and Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), fight for dominance as Furiosa wants nothing more than to return home.

Let me end with two observations. First, Chris Hemsworth follows up on his role as Thor (2011 and 2022) as the hateful Dementus. Quite frankly, given that he dominates this film, be prepared for a nasty ending where Furiosa gains revenge.

Secondly, a good friend and movie fan loved this film and he is stunned by my negative reaction. While I apologized, it was little more than a tedious waste of 2 ½ hours.

In any event, keep that in mind.
