Commentary on Treating Women as Second Class Citizens
Given the pathetic and disturbing actions by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, the Republican cat has been let out of the bag. They seek to treat women as second-class citizens, pure and simple. Back to the kitchen where you belong, ladies.
Mr. Rokita’s actions are shameful. He treats a 10-year-old pregnant rape victim and her doctor with contempt. Equally appalling, the Indiana Legislature, mostly white men, remain silent while they contemplate banning abortion later this month.
Tragically, the Republican Party is showing where they will lead us in the future. Ohio’s Attorney General, Dave Yost, and the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Board have all cast doubt on the allegation that the 10-year-old had been raped. Ohio Republican Jim Jordan joined them. Yet none of them, including Fox News who provided an outlet for both Rokita and Yost, have apologized.
Our Constitution states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” The equal protection clause in the 14th Amendment means that states must treat all their citizens equally.
This means that states can’t favor men over women. Women must be given the same control over their bodies as men. Republicans like Rokita are attempting to ignore our constitutional guarantees and they must be held accountable.
