Commentary on Hoosier Wild Animals

Bob, while we live on 6 acres in Il. And my wife has 3 horses, chickens, dogs and cats I can comment on the possum comment. Possums do spread EPM to horses that results in having to put the horse down. They love to live under the hay and like to steal eggs from the chicken coop. They have also killed 3 chickens. I have live trapped a number of them in the barn and have relocated some. The coyotes walk through the pasture and have also killed a few chickens and 2 geese. The raccoons carry rabies up here and again love the chicken coop. Raccoons also carry leptospirosis which is a dreadful disease for dogs and humans. The veterinarians up here recommend killing the raccoons and possums.
To close I do not like being the assassin, it is the role that one assumes when forced to protect the farm animals.
Thanks, John Hendricks
