The LEGO Batman Movie

While it will likely challenge in other areas, this endearing little film could very well win next year’s Oscar in the animated film category.

Lego Batman MovieThis is a wonderfully satirical adult film masquerading as an animated children’s movie. It took me a while to see it, but I found myself continuously laughing right through its rewarding conclusion.

No matter how you view this film, it must be seen by adults with or without children. It centers on a selfish, egotistical Batman who views himself as the one and only hope to defeat The Joker and preserve safety in Gotham City. How in the name of the artistic Gods could a LEGO movie possibly challenge for Oscar recognition for its screenplay? The answer? It should!

In summary fashion, Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) believes that his success relies simply on acting alone. He needs no help, and views his loyal butler and caretaker Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) as a guy who needs to stay in the background.

When The Joker (Zach Galifianakis) surfaces with his gang of rogues, Batman tells all those who want to help to get out of the way and let him do his expected wonderful job. He even resents the suggestion that he seek the help of Superman, and you feel that he is keeping a can of kryptonite available in the Batmobile to make sure that his glory is not tarnished.

In the process, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera) appears as a young orphan who mistakenly believes that Batman is trying to adopt him. The possibility of fatherhood is profoundly annoying to Batman, and he fails to recognize that young Mr. Grayson will eventually morph into Robin.

Rosario Dawson is the voice for Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, a young woman who continually fights Batman’s desire to go it alone to destroy The Joker. You can probably guess that Batman eventually learns the significance of friendship when it comes to fighting the bad guys, and the film is constantly filled with a high level of intrigue and comedy.

If you still are left doubting my high praise of this movie, let me just refer you to the password needed to go up the elevator at Wayne Manor, “Ironman sucks!” Even if you have to go alone, find a way to see this film. Just remember to do what I do and sit far away from any families to avoid their fear that a child molester masquerading as a lawyer is sitting next to them.
